IUL vs. Term Life: Which Product Should You Focus on in Your Sales Career?
One of the most common dilemmas for new life insurance agents is deciding which products to lead with in their presentations. While many agents choose to specialize, understanding the nuances between Indexed Universal Life (IUL) and Term Life insurance is essential for providing comprehensive advice to clients.
Term Life: The Foundation of Protection
Term life insurance is the simplest form of coverage. It provides a death benefit for a specific period—typically 10, 20, or 30 years. For agents, Term Life is often the easiest product to explain and sell. It has a lower barrier to entry for the client because the premiums are significantly more affordable than permanent options.
From a career perspective, Term Life is excellent for high-volume sales. It allows agents to help a large number of families quickly. However, the commissions per case are generally lower, and once the term expires, the agent-client relationship may end unless a conversion option is exercised.
Indexed Universal Life (IUL): The Advanced Strategy
IUL is a form of permanent life insurance that offers a death benefit along with a cash value component linked to a market index, such as the S&P 500. It provides the potential for tax-deferred growth and tax-free withdrawals in retirement, while also offering a “floor” to protect against market losses.
For agents, IULs are complex products that require deeper training and a more sophisticated sales process. The sales cycle is usually longer, but the rewards are higher. Commissions on an IUL case can be five to ten times higher than a standard Term policy due to the higher premiums involved.
Building a Balanced Book of Business
Successful agents rarely choose just one. Instead, they use Term Life as a “door opener” to protect the client’s immediate needs, then introduce IUL as a long-term wealth accumulation strategy once a relationship is established. Using a deal analyzer can help you understand how different carriers price these products and how those prices affect your commission overrides.
